Week Ten in Costa Rica

I’m finally feeling settled down and at home in the new place that I’m living. I’ve moved to San Luis de Monteverde, a small community of 350 people about a 20-minute drive down the Trocha (a road that the people of San Luis built themselves) from Monteverde.

I’m living at the Bella Tica Farm where I’m housed in a little house next door to my host family. We have our own kitchen, bathrooms, dining room, and TV. The little house can hold up to 20 volunteers (10 boys, 10 girls) upstairs in the bunkbeds. The farm hosts volunteers all year round to work on the farm. If you’re interested in more, check out their website!

My day consists of waking up early, although the rest of the volunteers opt to sleep in – it seems I’ve gotten into a sleep schedule that I can’t break.  After breakfast, I make the 20-minute hike down the mountain – which, of course, hosts beautiful views – to the San Luis Community Center, the home of the ADISL (“Association of Comprehensive Development of San Luis” in English). The ADISL is a community group that works to help the growth of the community through their many projects. They were essential to the construction of a new playground, the health center, a new cafeteria, and much more.

At the community center, there's a lot to do. We often work on little daily projects, such as re-laminating the "community tree" above and finding a better way for it to stick to the wall or translating their San Luis rural community tourism brochure into English. In addition to our daily work, we're going to be starting a participatory research project on a topic that we decide with the board of directors from ADISL. By the time I write the post for Week 12, I should have a way better idea of what that'll be and I'll be able to fill you in!

All I know is that San Luis was definitely the right choice to live for the last two months of my study abroad. Can't wait to see what the next month and half will be like before I head home.

Stay Beautiful,
Sadie
